The Real Cost of “Future-Proofing” Your Gaming PC

Buying more GPU than any tracked game currently needs isn't wrong, but it's a specific bet, not a requirement. Here's what the data actually shows.

Note: Tier placements come from our own hardware database and ReadyScore™ formula. This article reflects opinion and analysis built on that data, not a new fact claim.

The pitch sounds reasonable. The math usually isn't.

"Buy the best GPU you can afford now, so you don't have to upgrade again for years." It's common advice, and it's not entirely wrong, but it skips a real cost: paying today's premium for a Tier 10 card (like an RTX 4090 or 5090) to clear requirements that a Tier 7 card (an RTX 4070-class) already satisfies for every game we currently track.

GameRecommended-tier GPUOur tracked "headroom" cards
GTA 6 (predicted)Tier 7 (RTX 4070-class)Tiers 8-10 exist, but add no ReadyScore™ benefit
Fable (predicted)Tier 7Same
WARDOGS (official)Tier 7 (RTX 3070-class)Same
Metro 2039 (predicted)Tier 8Tiers 9-10 exist, no ReadyScore™ benefit

Every card above a game's Recommended tier scores the same 100/100 on that component. It may still deliver more raw FPS or higher settings headroom, ReadyScore™ measures whether you can run a game acceptably, not how much extra power sits above that floor, but for the specific games on this site, none of them currently need more than a Tier 8 card to fully clear Recommended.

When paying for headroom actually makes sense

  • You play at 4K. Our Enthusiast/4K tier genuinely calls for stronger cards than Recommended, that headroom is real if 4K is your target resolution.
  • You do non-gaming work (video editing, 3D rendering, AI workloads) where more VRAM and compute directly help outside of gaming.
  • You plan to keep the PC 4+ years and expect future games to demand meaningfully more than what we track today, that's a real bet, just recognize it as one, not a requirement of today's games.

If none of those apply to you, the honest recommendation is the same one our checker gives after every result: buy to clear Recommended for the games you actually plan to play, and put the difference toward RAM, storage, or just keep it in your pocket.
