GTA 6: PC vs Console
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, there's no PC version yet. When one arrives, here's what will likely be different, based on how every previous Rockstar PC port has played out.
Should you upgrade, or just buy a console?
Enter your current GPU, CPU and RAM. We'll estimate what reaching our predicted Recommended tier would cost, so you can compare it to a console price.
For reference: PS5 Digital $599.99, PS5 $649.99, Xbox Series X $799.99, Xbox Series S $499.99. See the full console comparison.
What PC will likely do better
| Area | Console (PS5/Series X) | PC (predicted) |
|---|---|---|
| Framerate | Locked modes, likely 30fps "Fidelity" / 60fps "Performance", a pattern set by most current-gen-only titles | Unlocked, limited only by your hardware, 100fps+ achievable on a strong rig |
| Resolution | Dynamic 4K (Fidelity) or ~1440p upscaled (Performance) | Native 4K or higher, monitor-dependent |
| Graphics settings | Fixed, developer-chosen presets | Granular sliders, draw distance, shadow quality, reflections, traffic density |
| Mods | None, historically | Likely. See our mod support prediction |
| Input | Controller only | Mouse/keyboard or controller, both supported |
| Load times | Fast (NVMe SSD standard in both consoles) | Fast on NVMe, noticeably slower on SATA SSD or HDD. See our storage guidance |
What should stay the same
Expected, not confirmed: Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6 at all, so nothing here is official. If GTA 6 follows the same pattern as GTA V and RDR2, story, map, missions, and online content should be equivalent across platforms, Rockstar has never shipped a cut-down PC version. GTA Online's economy and progression have historically been cross-platform-compatible within a generation, though cross-play between console and PC specifically has been inconsistent across Rockstar titles, so don't assume it by default.
Controller or mouse and keyboard?
PC gives you the choice; console doesn't. For driving-heavy sequences, a controller's analog stick still generally feels more natural than digital WASD steering, this is why most PC players who own both keep a controller plugged in for GTA-style games specifically. For shooting and aiming, mouse and keyboard has the precision edge, the same way it does in most third- and first-person shooters. Rockstar's PC ports have historically supported both without penalty, including full button remapping and separate control schemes for driving vs on-foot sections.
Why PC ports lag behind console launches
GTA V released on console in September 2013 and reached PC in April 2015, 19 months later. RDR2 released on console on October 26, 2018 and on PC on November 5, 2019, about 12 months later. The gap exists because Rockstar builds the console version first, then a separate team handles PC-specific work: unlocked framerates, ultrawide support, higher-resolution assets, and modding hooks all need dedicated engineering, not just a recompile. Track the countdown to see how long this gap runs for GTA 6.
