GTA 6 PS5 Storage Guide
A base PS5 gives you 667GB of usable space. A predicted ~150GB GTA 6 install eats over a fifth of that in one go. Here's how to make room, permanently, not by deleting your other games.
Do you actually need more storage?
Enter how much free space you have left on your PS5, we'll tell you if GTA 6 fits.
How much room you're working with
| Console | Usable storage | GTA 6 (~150GB) as a share |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 / PS5 Digital | ~667 GB | ~22% |
| PS5 Pro | ~1.89 TB | ~8% |
If you already have a handful of other big titles installed (Call of Duty, EA Sports FC, or any other 100GB+ title), a base PS5 fills up fast. There are two real fixes: expand the internal drive, or offload older games to external storage.
Option 1: install an internal M.2 SSD (recommended)
This is the only way to store and play PS5-native games like GTA 6 from expanded storage, external drives can't run PS5 games directly (more on that below). Sony's official steps:
- Fully power off the PS5 and unplug all cables. Lay it flat, power button facing down.
- Remove the console's side cover to expose the M.2 expansion slot.
- Unscrew and remove the expansion slot cover.
- Install your M.2 SSD (with heatsink attached) at an angle, then press down and secure it with the screw.
- Replace the expansion slot cover and the console's side cover.
- Power on, the PS5 will prompt you to format the new drive automatically.
- Go to Settings → Storage → Installation Location to set where new games install by default.
Your SSD needs a sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or higher and must fit within 110 × 25 × 11.25mm including its heatsink, most 2280-format (standard-size) NVMe drives with a heatsink qualify.
Compatible SSDs
2TB PS5-compatible M.2 SSD
Roughly triples your usable storage in one upgrade, enough for GTA 6 plus a full library without ever deleting anything again.
PS5 SSD Heatsink (if buying separately)
Only needed if your chosen SSD doesn't already include one. Check the listing before buying a separate heatsink.

Option 2: move old games to an external drive
A cheaper short-term fix: plug in any external USB drive and move your PS4-generation games onto it, those can be played directly from external storage. PS5-native games (GTA 6 included) can be stored on an external drive but must be moved back to internal or M.2 storage to actually run. In practice: use external storage as a shelf for games you're not currently playing, not as active space for GTA 6 itself.
External USB Hard Drive
Cheapest way to free up internal space, any USB 3.0 external HDD or SSD works for storing PS4-gen games.
